Scientists in India are claiming they have developed a vaccine for the Zika virus.
The virus which have been linked to birth defects in newly-born children after pregnant women are bitten by mosquitoes and more recently through sexual intercourse.
According to Dr Krishna Ella, Chairman and Managing Director of Bharat Biotech Ltd in Hyderabad, India, they are probably the first to file a vaccine for the virus.
Responding to the news of a vaccine being ready, the Indian Council of Medical Research's Director General Dr Soumya Swaminathan said:
"We have just been informed about the Zika vaccine candidate that Bharat Biotech has.
"We will examine it from the scientific point of view and see the feasibility of taking it forward.
"It is a good example of a Make in India product."
